Upon Bell's return as SMU's head coach, the team also gained halfback and placekicker Doak Walker. Walker won All-Southwest Conference honors his freshman year in 1945 and played in the East–West Shrine Game in San Francisco.
Morrison became known as "the father of the forward pass", due to the team's use of passing on first and second downs, instead of as a play of last resort.
